Cost Cutting: Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:07 pm

Today I made a new batch of dishwasher detergent.  I have been doing this for about a year and haven’t yet shared on any of my blogs so I’ll be sharing on Fun Family Tips soon as well.

Many of the recipes that you will find online call for washing soda instead of baking soda.  I had trouble finding washing soda when I first started this, so I looked it up and found out that there is a difference between the two, but it is in the manufacturing.  From what I read if you combine baking soda with boiling water, it will chemically change to the same product as washing soda when it is dehydrated. (Does anyone know where to find this article? I’d love to properly cite it but can’t remember where I read it.)

Now, I admit–I’m too lazy to do that.  So I decided to give baking soda a try instead (knowing that it is going to get to be at least 120 degrees inside my dishwasher anyway).  It worked perfectly–and has been working perfectly for months.  A word of caution: don’t expect miracles–you can’t toss baked-on crusted-on dishes in the dishwasher with this stuff and expect it to come out sparkling (or for your dishwasher to keep running for very long for that matter).  However, if you rinse your dishes lightly before placing them in this dishwasher, this is a super easy way to save.  It takes me about 2 minutes to make several months worth of detergent and a side benefit: I never have to worry about running out!

To make:

Mix 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup borax, and 1 package of lemonade or lemon-lime flavored kool-aid packet (this helps to cut grease – DO NOT use a red or dark colored kool-aid! Your dishes WILL stain!).  Store in your old detergent box or a plastic container will do.  I store mine in the last dishwasher detergent box that I bought sometime last year for now.

Cost Cutting: Groceries

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:59 am

One of the strategies that has worked well for cutting down on our grocery costs has been stockpiling.  I stockpile based on sales and the coupons that I have.

Basically, if it isn’t on sale, I’m probably not buying when it comes to groceries and toiletries.  Now this definitely wasn’t always the case–there was a time when I was younger and married that we blew $150-200 on groceries every two weeks.  After my son was born, I started to cut costs down a little bit, but didn’t really know what I was doing yet.  Now, my grocery bill is usually between $25-50 a week and we’re often able to skip grocery shopping for several weeks at a time.

When I began stockpiling, I actually spent more money on groceries than I had before.  This was because we still needed food and things that weren’t on sale while I was stocking up on the things that were.  This is pretty typical, but the long-term savings makes it SO worthwhile! Now, by stockpiling and planning my meals (I’ll post about that later), I almost never need anything that isn’t on sale.

I most frequently shop at Publix because they offer great Buy 1 Get 1 Free (BOGO) deals.  I love the way that Publix does this because instead of making 1 item truly “free” they make both items half price (Harris Teeter does as well).  They also accept coupons for EACH of the two BOGO items which leads to AMAZING savings and I often get food for free as a result (see the 3 French’s mustard and the Helluva Good Dip in the picture below-all were free).  Publix also doubles coupons up to .50 face value everyday.  Oh–and if you’ve ever been in a Publix, it’s almost a surreal experience compared to other grocery stores because their stores and clean, well stocked, and their employees are pleasant.

Harris Teeter doubles coupons up to .99 face value everyday and often has super double coupons (double coupons up to 1.98 face value) or triple coupons.  I do enjoy shopping at Harris Teeter but it is about 45 minutes away from my home.. There is a Publix 5 minutes from my home and another 5 minutes from my office.  BUT–I hear that they are building a Harris Teeter closer to my home, so we’ll have to see how it goes!

I cut and collect coupons like crazy.  I get the Sunday paper, get mailers with coupons, and print coupons from places like CoolSavings, Coupons.com, Redplum, and Smartsource. Then I compare the weekly sales ads to the coupons that I have and put the item on my list only if I can buy at a rockbottom price. This often means that I end up buying multiples of an item.  I have shelves in my garage dedicated to nonperishable food storage and this method has really been working out well for us.  The savings is incredible and it is allowing me to save cash so much quicker than before!

What my shopping trips are like: Look at the photo above.  This is this week’s shopping trip.  (There were actually 2 more cans of Chef Boyardee but they got snagged before I took the photo).  What I paid for all of this? $26.33.  My total savings for this shopping trip was $58.32.

Not bad!

High Level Goal Setting

So I’ve made the announcement that I’m going to quit my job (to you at least!)–but please don’t think that I’m just going to dilly-dally around all day after I do so. My plans are much more grandiose than that :)

Currently, I sell jewelry and handmade items on eBay, Amazon.com Marketplace and Fulfillment By Amazon, and Etsy (I use the term sell pretty loosely for the Etsy gig right now since I’ve only made 1 sale so far!), and run two additional blogs: Fun Family Tips and Holiday Craft Projects.  With an active 4-year old and all of my side projects, my days (and nights) are pretty packed right now–and probably will be for a long time!

So here’s my plan:  Make these side projects profitable enough to support myself and my son!

Obviously, a lot of my crafting, jewelry-making, and blogging is done in the early morning and late at night.  With minimal time to spare, I feel that being uber-organized in the next 3 years is going to be vital to my success.

Since this is still the early stages, I can be a bit more “high level” with my goals, but I’m going to go ahead and brainstorm on some of the goals that I need to achieve in the near future:

Begin advertising on Holiday Craft Projects and this blog – I have advertising on Fun Family Tips currently.  I advertise for Google Ads, Amazon.com, Alice.com, eBates, and several individual companies on Fun Family Tips.  What I do not, and will not advertise for is companies that I do not personally trust and would not personally deal with.  I feel that is unethical and would not compromise myself or my readers in that manner.

Begin advertising through my RSS feeds for all of my blogs using GoogeAds for feeds – This *should* be turned on as of this blog entry for 3yearplan, but I honestly won’t know until I post this :) It is definitely not working for Fun Family Tips though :( (What am I doing wrong?! Does it just take time to go live?! EEK!)

Get back to listing daily on Etsy – I took a bit of a break here.  This was actually the result of my frustration with the poor quality of my photos.  Jewelry is apparently incredibly difficult to photograph without proper lighting and no matter how amazing the piece looked in front of me, I couldn’t get past the horrible quality of the pictures.  I currently have at least 20 new pieces just waiting to be posted but I cannot get the photos to show the quality of the items! Which leads me to my next goal:

Build a light box for photographing jewelry – According to everything that I have read, this is the key ingredient that I am missing in my pictures.  I’m looking at several plans right now and I’ll let you know what I come up with soon!

Obtain a business license – Yup.  It’s time.  I haven’t earned enough yet from my side projects to require that I do so, but clearly, I plan to.

Focus on Holiday Craft Projects more – I haven’t touched it in a while.  It’s a great domain name, I have great ideas for it; I’ve just been short on time lately.

Cut costs and stockpile money – Realizing that I am planning to cut off my family’s main source of income in 2013 and that I may need a cushion to live off of to get this thing going,  I need to cut my costs, stockpile cash, and get prepared.  Again, I have to make this leap responsibly.  This is something that I have already been agressively focusing on and I will discuss further in future posts.

Eliminate Debt - Again, this is something that I have aggressively focused on recently and I currently have only 2 debts besides my mortgage – my car payment and a 401K loan that I took out to cover the costs associated with my divorce and subsequent custody battle.  I will discuss my plan of action for this goal soon as well.

Organize and consolidate my office/craft rooms – Yes.  I said rooms.  Currently, 2 of the 4 bedrooms in my house are occupied with my office and art supplies.  In order to be more productive I need to get these rooms completely organized and efficient–and in the interest of seeming like a more gracious host, I need to convert one of these rooms into a guest room (with supply storage, of course!).

Aggressively train my replacement for my current job - I truly believe in the mission of the company that I currently work for–it’s just not my dream.  The company has been very very good to me and I absolutely will not leave them in a tough spot without someone to fill my shoes.  The position I hold is a role that I created and developed.  Thankfully, I have an excellent staff that will just need a bit of grooming and one of them will definitely be ready to take my spot when I leave.

That’s the plan.  I’ll let you know when I think of more :)

3YearPlan

3 years from today, I will quit my job. That is the 3yearplan.  Not that exciting, huh? Let me give you a little more background.

In general, I like my job. It’s a good job  and I work for an amazing company. I earn a good salary and I receive large stock grants from my company on top of it.  I’m also a single mom to an amazing 4-year old little boy.  We live in a nice house, I drive a nice car, and we have a good life courtesy of the nice salary and stock that I mentioned above.

So why would I want to throw all of that away?

  1. I miss my son.  I’ve missed so much of his life already because I’ve had to go to work.  I feel guilty every single day when I leave him in the care of someone else.
  2. I have been employed for 11 years; I’ve spent the past 11 years of my life making money for and fulfilling the dreams of someone else.  It’s my turn now.
  3. Life is Good has a slogan that has appealed to me since the very first moment that I read it: “Do what you like, like what you do.”  This slogan is written on one of my favorite coffee mugs.  Every time I look at it or think about it, I feel that same familiar ache to “follow my bliss.” Life is too short to be anything less than happy.
  4. From a young age, we teach our children that they can be anything that they want to be, the sky is the limit! Why is it that when we make it to adulthood that some of us have become so comfortable in the familiar that we stop chasing our dreams? I know that I did—not anymore…and most certainly, not in front of my son.  The best example that I can possibly set for him is to follow what makes me truly happy and to “walk the walk.”

So why a 3 year plan instead of immediately turning in my notice?  In 3 words: I’m not crazy.  Just kidding! I have a mortgage to pay and a child to support! I believe in myself and I know that it WILL happen, but it is something that I cannot blindly jump into.

So why blog about it? Because I know that I’m not alone.

I know the mini-thrill that I feel every time I read about someone who has successfully managed to follow their dreams. When I read a magazine article or a blog or Etsy’s Storque Quit Your Day Job blog installments, I feel excited and energized.  I feel this wonderful sense of encouragement that I too can take a risk and make it work.

There are women and men everywhere who share this dream.  For me, I know that it is time to make that dream into a reality—join me as I make it happen.  I plan to blog it all—the ups, the downs, the reality.  All for your reading pleasure (and my personal motivation—hold me accountable, people!).
